Really interesting day, observing a creative environment starting at Area 10. Particularly thought those "debate" pods were such a great idea, pods for thought. What a great atmosphere and organisation. Great views from on top of the carpark, liked not knowing where we were going, its good to see people making the most of desolate areas. Never been to Peckham and most places we were taken, I think Jimmy and J-Dog rounded those 4 trips up lovely jubbly!! (only fools and horses), my hands clap for you.:o)

jimmy and j dog hosting a lovely friday morning in peckham.

Saw some really wicked stuff, really liked the warehouse, particualry the space aspect. Sometimes i think theres just not enough room for ideas to come out, feel like im trying to pull a banana out my nose sometimes. so that went down a storm with me! all very inspireing stuff.

Later on we looked into intergration and the effects of aproaching strangers and people you wouldnt normally talk to. I enjoyed this, was a fun novelty. think its always good to push outside the comfort zones. Me and isabella fernandez had a good time with it - my main motivation for blogging was to share these cheeky pics with you all. They tickled me. ha

I really enjoyed the workshop as if we hadn't gone on it, we may have never known these places were there, let alone have seen them. Some of the places are so random as well, such as the car park but are being used for great things and the empty space is being used creatively. Its interesting to hear from people some of the knowledge they have about particular areas and exhibitions, as then we can pass some of this on to more people.

Always cool hearing other peoples experiences, so was an interesting talk and I know quite a few people felt inspired after seeing the paintings, even if its not the type of work that they usually like. I definitely want to try a painting like this sometime and experiment with it. Personally I liked all of the work in the gallery and was all interesting to see.

hey this is my expirence with the trips on the mystery tour (actually mysterious lol) and kinda fun, also loved the wieden and kennedy, i learnt even if your working in a design agency in london, your works going to be global for the brands your working for so i cant wait to work in the industry. keep the trips up, loved it

WEEK 2: MYSTERY TOUR / FRANK TROUTBECK

With the theme of Editing being forefront in our minds, I turned my thoughts to the way we edit space - both how we organize it, and how we steer ourselves around it. Nature in the city comes right up to us here, and taps us on the shoulder. If we pay attention to small details then all sorts of hidden things start to reveal themselves: sky rats, seeds, secret flowers, falcon feathers, slime. But if we pay too much attention to the small, will we lose sight of the bigger picture. This links back into your Scale theme of last week. Good editing requires the minute and the mega, micro and macro to held in mind at the same time.

Anyway, keep your eyes peeled, and here's that poem:

The green man's unseen hand
spans traffic islands, urban demands,
vast city light glands, cars, buses, taxis, trains, cats and dogs doing handstands,
threading our space like a noisy noise garland.
- but don't worry, it's all been planned,
there's nothing to UNDERstand.
Just listen, wait, he won't come on demand,
appears in front of you as you're crossing the road:
a guide who simply shows how to get to the other side,
but that's nott the only thing the green man knows.
Quite apart from the blossoming roads, walls, windows, shadows,
the city still grows...
moss between the paving slabs
buddleia by railway tracks
grass massing in parks
millions of insects hiding in the dark
working together to carry nature's spark
through the city labyrinth that sometimes seems ruled by chance,
but all these things work beyond the merry dance of coincidence...

So meet the green man in the green man pub
near the green man roundabout
for shandy, organic grub, and hear him spout about
ivy leaves, how the city breathes,
through trees peopling streets,
how puddles are pools for ghost fishes to meet
and eels swim livid under london's bridges,
nudging out crayfish from muddy underwater ditches
like suds on dirty dishes.

The green man feels the city's bloody beating heart
in the twitter and dart of the black redstart.
A red-tailed bird, black body, cheeky eye,
it lives in high ruins, checks out the low sky,
likes power stations and railway sidings,
when the thames tide comes in it sings,
flicks its wings and goes out to find things.

Yesterday, vibing on some free wi-fi
i got an email from an uknown sender,
subject header: 'RE: Earth'
saying, 'the green man is a symbol of rebirth,
he's got green sticky hair
and he seems to be everywhere.'

The photo at the end was my chosen photo of the morning for Joe to take. I chose this one as the stamps were so decorative and creative. I definitely want to come back here to take a longer look and you can get your own stamps made here! The Book of Shadows.... creeped some of us out. I found it in the bookshop and its pages were all just empty. I really enjoyed creating the collage to summarise the walk. Maybe I may create a new one or larger one for a development. My 5 words: Mysterious, discovery, adventure, creativity and interesting.

I loved the architecture around the Barbican and to sit outside the Barbican Centre was so relaxing, with beautiful surroundings. Postmans Park was also a favourite. It was this one little area out of a whole giant busy city, that you could escape into a peaceful and quiet area.

On this trip we were introduced to Paul Purges, a former graduate in architecture.

With a general interest in most things creative, he put aside architecture and is now a doing various collaborations amongst being a DJ and traveling around the UK. Nice Guy.

We started off in a park near Holborn Tube St, then onto The Hunterian Museum (interesting place of studies in science, anatomy and surgery founded by John Hunter), where pretty much everything you could imagine was in a pickled jar, awesome! We then moved onto the Swedenborg Foundation, which was a bookshp downstairs but we were taken up some stairs to what seemed to be a study area, and were spoken to a bit about Emanuel Swedenborg (The Strange One). An all round genius, we were given a brief intro to his works and beliefs. Revealed to us was his ability to describe life hereafter based on his actual experiences in the spiritual realm. A highly organized heavenly life, universal speech, our entry into the nest world, and many other matters. Amoungst dealing with an understanding of his visions, he was a mathematician, a scientist, a poet, a musician, an anatomist, an astronomer, a metallurgist an engineer.....and so on....divinley inspired. I believed this to be an interesting introduction as its basis is that we are all driven by something....or is it someone?

I bought a beautifully illustrated story about his life leading from his apprenticeship and apparitions. A man of two worlds.

We then popped into an occult book shop, thereafter a stamp shop, finishing off the trail at The British History museum by being introduced to DR DEE (good DJ name) an astrologer for Elisabeth I, he also claimed to be able to communicate with angels, looking at surfaces to extract info. In a cabinet was placed what was called the Seal of God (a golden wax disc engraved with magical names and symbols) in between which he claimed to see visions of devine beings and formulate the unveiling secrets and language of the Universe. Trippy stuff.

From all this we had to make a collage of what we felt to be the summary of this journey. I personally found this trip to be something of much interest to me as I believe in always looking beyond things to find alternative meanings. Rounding the trip up we all said a few words defining our experience. Enlightening was one that came up alot.

We weren't really allowed to document this journey with photographs but I inevitably snuck a few in. Woops.

Here are a few images from the first trip we took, starting at the Barbican leading up to Postmans Park. We were asked to record as much as we could, considering scale, sound and atmosphere. The Barbican is a great place for stepping back in time or for just simply enjoying the scale of its surroundings.

I found it to be a trail I would like to revisit as there is so much of back alley london that is to be discovered. Before leaving the Barbican heading to Postmans Park we walked through an exhibition aptly named "Curved" which combined the sound of the woods with approximatley 8-10 camera angles showing a nature retreat environment slowly moving from one frame to another around a curved wall, whilst a few found objects were displayed alongside some form of manipulation of their form, whether is be scale or texture.

We continued on through the Barbicans high bridges leading onto separate streets through London's Guildhall, finishing of at a quiet Postmans Park were there were memorials for people who had passed quite some time ago. This along with its overlapping trees and vibrant tulips made a reflective tranquil walk indeed. Suggestions for an outcome: collages, a visual map, or simply a manipulated photograph combining scale with words.

We met Frank Troutbeck (poet), Paul Purgas (independent curator), and James Wilson (librarian from the Swedenborg Society). The audio quality of recordings from Week 2 are considerably worse than those from week 1, but they are audible nonetheless. These have been posted below - there are 9 in total.

We will give a pickled Mars bar to the first student who makes a post. The collages are a good starting point - upload these with your name underneath. Frank Troutbeck and Paul Purgas will also be making contributions.

WEEK 1: SCALE / CALEB KLACES

I asked people what was the biggest thing they’d ever seen (listen below). Answers fell into two main groups: some said something beyond the earth – the sky or sun; others named a building or human structure. A few mentioned dreams. I wonder what people afterwards kicked themselves for not saying…

What struck me about scale when we were walking around in the sun was that tiny fragments of big things can seem bigger than really big things which are fully intact. The remains of the Roman amphitheatre under Guildhall are pretty minimal, but I couldn’t get my head round the size it must have been when it was up. The same goes for the tiles in Postman’s Park. I’m not sure if they’d have the same impact if they were huge, would they? Their smallness is big.

Maybe that’s not so surprising coming from a poet. It doesn’t get much more small-big than poems. Although there must be a design equivalent…

We hope that this blog will become useful to you as your LONDON project develops - please see it as a continuation of the walks and the talks. It is a place for you to upload anything you want. We have emailed you all with login and password details - you are all authors. We will also be giving access to who we meet - for instance, week 1 is Caleb Klaces.

Audio files from each of the walks (recorded on portable MP3 recorder) will be uploaded to this page. They look like videos because this is the only way you can upload audio to the blog (as far as we are aware).
